Verify, Educate & Empower

Unfortunately, no one can guarantee the safety of all athletes participating in youth athletics.  What we can do however is verify, educate and empower.  JVA requires a robust background screening for all coaches and administrators working with athletes to verify they have not been previously convicted of a crime that endangers athletes.  Further, with JVA's focus on athlete development they are working to implement an ATHLETE education program to assist athletes with their empowerment though ANY adverse situation including but not limited to appropriate relationships with adults, peers and younger athletes.  Though recognizing and reporting potential incidents by coaches and other adults is very important, preventing unfortunate incidents should be the goal... and that starts with the education and empowerment of athletes!

How does the JVA verify?

The JVA uses the National Center for Safety Initiatives (NCSI) as their background screening process.  As stated on the NCSI site, "NCSI has long been trusted by our nation’s premiere sport governing bodies, the National Council of Youth Sports (NCYS) and thousands of other grass roots sports programs."

The NCSI includes the following in their screen:

  • SSN Validation

  • National Criminal Database Searches

  • OFAC (Office of Foreign Assets Control) Database Search

  • SOR (Sex Offender Registry)

  • Real Time County Records Search for the longest county of residence in the last 5 years.
